The Tempest

Professors Carolina Conte and Tony Steve collaborate on a movie production of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. The movie produced and directed by Carolina Conte will be screened accompanied by a live performance of the original music composed by Tony Steve

 

Intercollegiate Choral Festival

The 17th Annual Intercollegiate Choral Festival will host the choirs of Florida State College, Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida to kick off the collegiate choral season.

Exotic, exciting and exhilarating is the music from Bali, Africa, Brazil, and beyond. The JU percussion ensemble performs a wide variety of songs, styles and pieces from percussion music from around the globe.

 

Thoroughly Modern Millie

Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a small town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a slavery ring in China. The style of the musical is comic pastiche.

 

Serenade for Strings

Films Composers Concert

Short films scored by student composers will be used to demonstrate techniques for creating music in different genres. Dr. Dennis Vincent and the Film Scoring students will show short films and comment on philosophy, emotional tone, psychological implications, and special techniques used in writing film scoring cues.

This year’s annual Piano Studio Class Recital will celebrate Jacksonville University’s newest ensemble: A Marching Band! Marches by Strauss, Sousa, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Elgar, Debussy, and others are featured. Solo piano, four hands at one piano, two pianos, and eight hands at two pianos in this fifth annual event. Get in step with all the fun!

Dr. Shannon Lockwood and Dr. Scott Watkins perform a collection of pieces for cello and piano inspired by opera, including music by Beethoven, Rossini, Verdi, and Puccini.

 

Street Scene, An American Opera

Based on the play by Elmer Rice with lyrics by Langston Hughes and music by Kurt Weill, Street Scene embodies themes of love, loss, and survival in this emotional, moving story about families living in a multi-ethnic tenement in New York City in 1946. Directed by Kimberly Beasley, Street Scene will feature talented JU singers and actors. The beautiful and lively score full of classical and jazz idioms will be played by the Jacksonville University Orchestra conducted by Dr. Marguerite Richardson.
