The following are summaries of President's Council meeting. The group consists of the President, Vice Presidents, Faculty Assembly President, EAC President, Student Body President, and several other executive staff members. The group meets on the first and third Tuesdays. These summaries are just that, a summary of the meeting topics. Questions concerning any topics listed here should be addressed to your vice president or representative.

Introductions
Caroline Busker and Phillip Milano were introduced as new staff in Marketing Department. Caroline is the new event coordinator and Phillip is the new communications manager. Also introduced were the new JUSA leaders: Brendan Crupa is president and a physics and mathematics major from NY and Trevor Touchton, from Swanee County FL., who is an engineering student in the 3/2 program.
Physical Plant Update:
•The amphitheater project is underway. The concrete will be poured today. The Strom family is donating the facility. Completion is due first part of May.
•The golf course practice facility is moving forward. drainage is being addressed and a new lake is being dug now.
•The JU sculpture was installed in the Green Street entrance. Lights and landscaping will be coming soon.
•During Spring Break demo will happen for the flight simulator and painting of the Gooding ceiling
•A new roof will be installed on Reid
•Bids are being collected for the expansion of the Bucaneer Room in the Commons
•Soccer stadium planning is near completion and will begin soon.
•The handball courts have been closed. There are gaps in the concrete and it is unsafe. It will be evaluated and a plan proposed.
•The snack bar at the baseball stadium is complete.
•Fertilizer and weed control for the whole campus is beginning now.
Student Concerns
The student leaders compiled a list of student suggestions. Themes were around better food and living quarters. Also campus improvements around campus.
Legislative Update
The bill supporting a senior care facility adjacent to campus has passed the House and had not yet been cleared through the Senate. A former trustee, Greg Nelson, is the businessman behind the project.

•Candidates for Marching Band director will be visiting campus in the next few weeks. student interest is high.
•The SACS site visit for the doctorate nursing program happened last month. Everything went very well and passed with flying colors.
•The second annual College of Arts and Science panel discussion went well.
•A group of students and professors from Northern Mexico visited the School of Education. A successful event.
•Employee health fair is going on today.
•Artis received a life-times ward from the NBA Retired Players association.
•Culture of excellence program is coming to campus. Training and support for customer friendly initiatives at all levels of the university.
•The PPI had a successful meeting of their advisory board.

Textbooks on reserve in the Library
Other Universities have copies of textbooks available in the library on reserve. the library has looked at this recently and estimated the cost at$55k. The deans will work with library to move forward on this. Possibly Advancement could raise funds for this. Finance will add this to the bookstore RFP.
Scholarship Week
Student Life teamed with Advancement and Financial Aid to assist students with applying for available scholarships. Completed applications were received from 180+ students and several have already received off-campus scholarships.
Service Excellence Program
From student surveys, the retention leadership council has researched customer service training programs for employees. One was selected and details were presented and steps moving forward were discussed. This work will be tracked in TracDat.
Meal Plan Usage During Breaks
Food services is closed during Thanksgiving, days before Spring Semester and Spring Break. There are still students on campus who are looking for food. Student Life will discuss options with Sodexo Food.

Physical Plant Update
• Seeding at the intramural fields has happened. Final grading on the golf practice facility is happening now. That will be followed by irrigation and final grading. There is a large amount of debris that. Will be removed. A new retention pond is being built on the southwest corner of campus.
• Roof repairs have happened at Reid, Merritt/Science Buildings.
• There is a new permanent generator at the Kinne Center.
• Lighting upgrades happened in the dining facility.
• There were some electrical and water upgrades over the break.
• There is a new drop ceiling in the Boardroom.
• The intersection just west of the main entrance is now a three-way stop sign.
Public Policy Institute
Rick Mullaney was introduced as the new director of the Public Policy Institute. He described his background and the new institute. Plans are underway for a new masters program, community outreach programming and non-degree certifications. The masters program would be the first in Florida. There are also discussion of joint degrees with Law and MBA with a possibility of Marine Science. There is an advisory board of 18. They represent a good cross section of Jacksonville leaders. Rick will also serve as the pre-law advisor.
Census Date
There has been a sub-committee of the Retention Committee looking at changing the official census date. Traditionally the date is the second Friday of Fall Semester. The proposal is to move it to the last Friday of September. We would capture data that is better for reporting retention, budgeting, graduation rate, etc. It was discussed and approved.

• Alum David Walker will be presenting the Fiscal Forum Thursday, January 26 at 1 pm in the Terry Concert Hall. The event is open to the public.
• Spring Spruce Up is February 24.
• Ortho enrollment is full for next fall. There is a great deal of interest in the program. Site visit for Ortho accreditation is the end of March. Parking is an issue for the clinic patients. Options were discussed and will be studied.
• A new cohort of 40 MBA students from Saudi Arabia started last week.
• Winter Alumni Gathering is Feb. 17-19 with a host of activities. Look for announcements to come. Go to ju.edu/alumni
• There have been 27 classroom technology upgrades donated and installations are happening now.
• Homecoming 2012 is September 28-30
• The Moe's Classic is Feb. 19. JU plays Navy and Denver plays Ohio State.

Physical Plant Update
- Meritt Penticoff and Reid Science roof repairs are complete. Additionally a leak at the Kinne Center was fixed.
- The Kinne Center emergency generator is on site and
will be installed shortly. This is to keep the refrigerators and
emergency lights going.

A message board has been installed near the Student commons. An announcement will be made to campus about how to get messages on the board. This addition is part of the Pepsi contract.

The JU sculpture will be painted and installed soon.

Food service has bought decorative lighting for the cafeteria and it will be installed over the break.

Sprinklers for the intramural are complete. They will smooth it and then plant grass. The drainage issues will be addressed with two new pipes out to the lake.

The golf practice facility is progressing. Features have been located and grading is happening now.
Follow up with the 53 Campaign Event. The event was sold out at 460. The auction raised over $20k. Robyn McCloud did a great job coordinating the event.
Commencement is Saturday. Graduate reception at 4pm Friday. The ceremony is Saturday at 10.
Campus Security: Discussions are underway to consider hiring sworn officers as part of the Campus Security team. It has been proposed to have one sworn officer per shift that can intervene and make arrests. This will be reviewed and possible proposed for the new academic year.

There are now 15 online general education courses for the nursing program and the faculty have responded well to the initiative.

Physical Plant Update
• Intramural
fields improvement is proceeding. The old track has been removed, the field has
been level, irrigation installed and new turf planted. Also, the drainage
issues of the past are being addressed and will function better in the future.
• The golf
practice area will begin now.

• JEA has
added new electrical capacity to the Arts Annex.
• The new
digital message board will be placed later this month. This is part of the
Pepsi Contract.

Four-Year Graduation Guarantee Proposal
Admissions
has floated a proposal for a four-year graduation guarantee for students who
commit to the plan. This will give us an edge in recruiting and help with
retention and graduation rates. The Deans Council has reviewed the plan and
will be discussed at Faculty Assembly tomorrow.
Students with Large Balances
Bills are
sent on a monthly basis and now students with large remaining balances receive
a more aggressive collection process starting in November. The Student
Solutions Center is hoping to soften the impact on students. Aid pending and
posting of external aid takes time. The Solutions Center staff are contacting
students who need to make arrangements in order to register.
Student Discussion Panel Suggestion
A student
has suggested something similar to Rollin College’s Fox Day (Google it!) Basically,
it is a campus tradition that is a day for camaraderie and not classes.

Trustees Meeting
The Executive Committee and the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees will meet tomorrow. The new auditors will report on their findings. There are no surprises, however, items have been identified for correction to the benefit of the functioning of University, and to date all items have been fixed.
Also, the Trustees will review bank proposals for refinancing our debt. Both proposals will save the University interest payments annually and will free up the bond reserve to replenish Legacy Funds that have been used in recent years.
Homecoming
The president will host the Homecoming President's Reception Friday night at 6pm in the Rowing Center followed by a low country boil. Mayor Brown and Trustee Matt Kane are being honored by the alumni association. The football game will be at 1pm vs. Davidson. The evening will be capped by a luau.
Additionally, students have events scheduled all week leading up to homecoming.

We are meeting with the search firm for the DCOB dean position tomorrow to discuss the individuals they suggest we visit with. The search for the Education dean has been announced and there are no new developments.
SACS: Drafts of narratives are being drafted. There is a new requirement for student service directors to show qualifications. Paperwork will be distributed to the specific individuals.
The EAC open forum will be Thursday at noon in the Gooding Auditorium.
Mayor Brown will be the honorary coach at the football game.
Lacrosse parents will be on campus in big numbers this weekend.
Football, men's soccer and cross country are all in first place in the league.
The Friends of the Library had their annual luncheon and was very well attended.

Guidelines for tailgating: The use of the Grove before football games is sold by athletics to patrons and parents who are season ticket holders for tailgating purposes. It is usually non-students, but some students do buy spaces. They presence of drinking games is an issue that needs to be handled reasonably with families, students and alum. The DCOB back lot is reserved for student tailgating. Current course of action will be to have Campus Security to help educate fans if issues arise.
Decision-making Groups: Academic Affairs is requesting a list of all campus decision-making groups that includes composition, a description and how often they meet. this information is requested for accreditation. Please forward the info to Dr. Becker.

• President reported on the Trustees meeting that happened last week. The budget was approved. The budget included a 3% raise pool that will appear in pay checks at the end of October and will be retroactive to July. They also approved the sale of the Chi Chi restaurant property on Arlington Expressway. It was sold for appraised value. The proceeds will be used for scholarships.
• There are two new trustees, Mike O'Mally of CSX and Michael Hill of Acosta Foods. Paul Perez resigned from the board.
• The trustees also approved the University's $85m comprehensive campaign. This will now move into a more public phase. The concluding date is November 2015.
• Commencement will be December 10. Trustee Carolyn Munroe Wilson will be the speaker and honorary degree recipient.
• Signage issues on campus need to be addressed by the administration by contacting Derek Hall.
• There are issues with the graffiti JU senior gift that will need to be addressed.
• Homecoming is in two weeks and there is a big push to enlist alums to come.
• There are 70 people rsvp'd for Parent's Weekend this week. Rain location will be in the DCOB.
• The employee picnic will be this Friday at noon.
• Soccer, both men and women, will host a reunion during Homecoming.

Tracking attendance
Faculty are being asked and reminded to take attendance. This will help address new Federal tracking requirements for students receiving aid.

• Women's soccer had two great home wins against Furman and Georgia State.
• Volleyball beat Clemson and lost a close one to Florida.
• Men's soccer beat UMASS 2-0
• Football lost a road game to Citadel 31-9. They next play at Western Illinois.
• The auditors are still on campus and should conclude in about two weeks.
• Alumni giving had a nice jump in August. There is some momentum leading into the new academic year.
• A restricted endowment has been received of about $700,000.
• An offer is out for a new director of grants and should be on staff by the end of the month.
• The phone-a-thon will begin next week and will focus on raising monies for scholarships
• Alumni is hosting two events in Atlanta this week.
• The new Wave magazine is out. We are moving to three editions per year, with the next edition coming out at the first of the year. If anyone has story ideas, please forward them to the marketing office.

Physical Plant Update
Discussed the tracking path of Tropical Storm Emily. Physical Plant is reviewing their preparation. Mechanical systems are being tested after some upgrades this summer. Early arriving student/athletes (300+) are coming now. Dolphin Green beach will be completed as well as the pavilion and restrooms. The boardwalk is now complete near the MRSI. Orthodontics upgrade and remodel is progressing well. Core samplings for the proposed amphitheater have happened and engineering estimates will now be completed.
Hall of Fame Events
The induction is next week, August 12. On Friday Dec. 2 we will have a benefit dinner for scholarships in Artis’ honor as part of the 53 Campaign.
Giving Numbers
VP Howland reported on the 2011-12 Giving. JU collected about $4 million dollars. Alumni giving rate has slipped a little, as did the total number of individual donors. Members of the Board of Trustees donated over $2.5 million. A major focus will be engaging more alumni. Events such as homecoming (October 21), the 53-campaign event, and Alumni Getaway (February 17) will focus getting more alums on campus.
Enrollment Report
With the decision to raise the academic standards for the incoming freshman class is a bit smaller than planned. The academic credentials took a substantial increase. Retention of returning freshman continues to plague the institution.
Tobacco Free Campus
EAC conducted a campus survey concerning a Tobacco Free campus policy. Their results match the student and faculty results. Sixty-five percent voted for status quo concerning the current policy.

• Kevin Bennett is the new president of the EAC. He missed today’s meeting due to the birth of his second child.
• There are 14 students enrolled in the new Nursing doctorate degree.
• The new director for Teaching and Learning is Dr. Karen Jackson. Dr. Sepheri is the director of graduate programs and business ADP.
• The 2nd year of the MFA just completed and was very successful
• PC deployment is continuing again this year. Most campus machines are in good shape.
• Our softball and men’s lacrosse coaches were hired away. The assistant softball coach was promoted. An offer has been made to a coach for men’s lacrosse coach.

Smoke Free Campus Initiative
The EAC had an exercised discussion about the proposal. They will have another meeting with a presentation from the Smoke-Free committee and that will be followed by an online vote.
The faculty discussed it in Assembly and will conduct an online survey.
JUSA also reported the results of the Smoke Free Campus initiative. Seven hundred students participated and 51% voted in favor of the ban and 42% voted against.

• JUSA has ordered bike racks campus that will be installed soon.
• Order of the Dolphin was a great success with a good crowd and activity.
• Adopt-a-Classroom campaign is underway. Upgrade of each classroom
• This is the best spring, competitively ever. Baseball will play Stetson for first place on Saturday. Softball is currently in first place. Track and Field won their 6th consecutive outdoor championship. Women’s lacrosse won their conference without a loss. Men’s and Women’s crew finished 2nd in the Southeast finals to lead into Dad Vail.
• Hall of Fame Banquet is April 30. Fran Kinne will be among the inductees.
• The auditors have completed their initial review.
• The student solutions center is helping current students get registered through outreach. Additionally they are contacting students who have balances.
• Today is the last day of classes. Tonight is the pancake breakfast at 10 p.m.

Physical Plant Update
• B
otts and Williams Hall are getting an upgrade on the boiler control systems and will happen just after the semester ends. Similar upgrades are happening in Merritt Penticoff.
• New compressor in Gooding was installed.
• Founders building covering is nearly complete. New lighting has also been installed.
• Dolphin Green area work continues with beach, pavilion, bathrooms.
• Boardwalk for the MSRI will be installed east from the building to the parking near the River House.
• A donor has agreed to fund an amphitheater just south of the MRSI.
• The new parking lot surface in the Grove and near the library are holding up well.
New Student Orientation
There are major changes for New Student Orientation. There will be two sessions. The first on June 20-21 and 27-28. The student needs will be addressed so there is not a big rush in the Fall. There will also be two sessions of the Freshman Leadership Retreat.
Student Solutions Center
The center is up and running. They are reaching out to students who have a D or F on their mid-term grades and encouraging them to take advantage of campus resources. Students with high-balances are also being contacted. They will also be reaching out to students who are eligible to register and have not done so yet.

• Carla Harris has been announced as the 2011 Commencement Speaker. An announcement is on the website.
• The reading program, led by Dr. Tammy Ryan, is receiving national notice and will host a Scholastic conference on campus in August.
• The DNP program has been submitted and the first students will be enrolled this fall.

Facilities Review. President and VP Scaduto toured the Founders Building yesterday. There are several urgent issues to repair roof over the interior walkway. Bids are coming in and being reviewed. Also, improvement will commence on the “mulch lots” near baseball and the football field. Since we can’t pave the areas, grading, adding fill and addressing drainage.
Spring Spruce Up will be February 25 at noon. Free lunch, t-shirts, work assignments will be distributed at the back of Howard.
Search Updates:
Orthodontics Director: Campus visits are proceeding. Another candidate will be on campus next week.
DCOB Dean: Reference checks are proceeding on a short list (6) of candidates. The next step will be deciding on an interview list.
Controller: New controller will begin March 15. Liza Mullins, CPA, most recently from SCAD.
Student Solutions Center
A committee has meet to select interviewees for the assistant director and director positions. Two current employees for each position have been selected for interviews.

• Our lawyer has reminded us that we can’t endorse any candidates. We have an employee running for mayor. If “speaking” on campus moves toward campaigning, this is a violation of our policies.
• Thursday night will be the JUSA debates and elections will be held next week.
• The Holocaust presentation will be in Terry Concert Hall Thursday evening.
• Friday through Sunday, we are hosting the Florida Honors Council meetings downtown.
• University Advancement has added the option to give via credit cards. A module is being added now to make it possible to make the donations recurring.
• Women’s lacrosse will play UF Wednesday evening. The final home basketball games are this weekend. A basketball player reunion is happening this weekend. Moe’s Grill Sunshine Classic is Sunday at Everbank Field. JU will play Georgetown and Duke will play Notre Dame.
• Admissions hosted 26 private high school counselors yesterday. They were here for a campus tour and information gathering session.
• Matt Dobbins will be leaving the University this week. A reception will be held Thursday afternoon.
• Admissions just signed an international recruitment deal with a recruiter in India. They are pursuing another agreement with a European recruiter.

President Romesburg introduced Michael Howland, the new Vice President for University Advancement. Michael expressed his excitement and anticipation for future efforts of the Advancement staff.
Facilities Update
• Founders Building had a ceiling fall in recently. Repairs are in progress and bids are being collected for fixing the internal awning. The future of the building needs to be discussed.
• The natural gas install is still in progress and should be finished by the end of the month.
• Dolphin Green pavilion is in the process. Grass is growing on the fields. Utilities have bee run for bathrooms at the beach but no funds for the additional construction become available.
Enrollment Report
The Spring 2011 Census Report shows 2,402 undergrads and 450 graduate students. Total student headcount for Spring Semester is 3,533.
Recruitment for Fall 2011 is going well. Nearly all measures are running above the set goals. President led a discussion of enrollment trends on factors such as academic standing, ethnicity, family characteristics and retention.
Search Updates
• Controller is down to three candidates. Should be an offer out next week.
• Orthodontics has had two candidates in and will have one more visit campus soon.
• DCOB dean search has a sizeable pool that has been reduced to about 13. They will be meeting to establish a short list.
• Marine Science and Biology are searching for faculty slots.

• JUSA elections will be February 21-22.
• Spring Spruce Up is Friday, February 25th.
• Positions for the Student Solutions Center will be posted next week for director and assistant director.
• There is interest in the land north of campus. Negotiations are going on with Principal Financial.
• JU will host a lecture on February 17 at 7 p.m. in Terry Concert Hall in relation to the Holocaust display at the Jacksonville Library. There is a reception at 6 p.m.
• JU is sponsoring the Florida Collegiate Honors Council meetings this month. Several hundred Florida honors students and faculty will be in attendance.

• Census data for enrollment will be determined this afternoon. The formal Trustee meeting will be held next week. All committees have met and are prepared for the meeting next week. Several committees will be reporting at the meeting. A couple individuals will be presented to the board as new members.
• Several students were trapped in the Oak Hall elevator for an hour last night. The incident report shows that it was handled appropriately and the students are fine.
• Student Counseling has been moved to the office in Marks Chapel.
• Our Web Manager, Steve Choi, was recruited away and will be leaving the University to accept a job in industry.
• Residence Halls will shortly have swipe card access. Install should be completed by Spring Break.
• February 22, the new JUSA will be voted on.
• The Student Solutions Center is complete. Staffing will be Student Shuttle will be the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, noon to 8 p.m. The bus will travel between the Wal-Mart, Towne Center and the beach.
• The installation of Recruiter is still ongoing. There are many issues that are being addressed immediately.
• Barry Milligan will be leaving Athletics to take a job at the Jacksonville Arena. Feb. 3 is the free basketball night vs. Belmont. Former baseball players came back to campus for a Decade of Dolphins event. Close to 130 alums attended the events. The Cost Hitting Facility was dedicated. It was a very successful event.
• Christian Block has returned to his old position in IT.
• The EAC reported that they are overall in favor of the Smoke-Free campus. A presentation will happen in Faculty Assembly.

Relay for Life
Dr. Downs and Melissa McGlynn, student coordinator, discussed JU’s participation in the annual Relay for Life. The event is planned for April 1-2, starting a 6 p.m. The committee called for support from students, faculty, staff and executives. They discussed how to form a team and ways to fundraise for the cause.
Physical Plant Report
Piping for the new natural gas system is progressing and is projected to save the University over $100k. Water valves were replaced in Oak Hall. Heaters and boilers in Botts had some work. The banquet room in Kinne was redone. The Student Success Center in the Davis Commons has been built. Dolphin Green work continues.
Institutional Effectiveness
Self-assessments are due the end of January. A committee is being formed that includes members from around campus plus two faculty members. Approximately 8 departments will be reviewed each year.
Installation of RECRUITER
A new software program that handles the front-end of all recruitment processes is nearly 90% complete. We are hoping for it to go live by mid-January. This will streamline the behind-the-scenes handling applications.

• A list was discussed for the changes in our Peer and Aspirational Institutions.
• Classes start tomorrow. Students have moved in.
• Men’s basketball is doing very well. They are 3-0 in conference. They have beaten two SEC teams (Auburn and Florida). Athletics GPAs overall should be about 3.15. Many teams saw drastic improvements. There has been a big focus on working with students and faculty.

Tobacco-Free Campus Proposal
Lynnette Kennison from the JU Nursing department presented a proposal for designating JU as a tobacco-free campus. The campus recently moved to designated smoking areas and now wants advance that new policy for the Fall 2012. This program is similar to the University of Florida’s policy that was recently implemented. The council discussed the idea of the policy, possible implementation, and potential problems. Discussions will be had in Faculty Assembly, EAC and JUSA.
Physical Plant Updat

Botts Hall is having issues with the hot water system. There are repairs going on to get it running 24/7. There are other HVAC issues currently being addressed with the assistance of local contractors.
Dolphin Green and landscaping the west end of the Valley is progressing well.
Sodexo is refurbishing the Kinne Center banquet room.
Off-Campus communications and solicitations
The issue of having individual departments sending sub-par looking electronic communications was discussed and the possibility of expanding the communication related policies. University Relations and University Advancement will discuss.
Strategic Plan
There is a meeting of the Trustees Executive Committee on Monday were President will report progress on key points related to the Strategic Plan.
Commencement
Friday at 4 p.m. is the Graduate Reception at the Alumni House. The ceremony is 10 a.m. Saturday.
House Calls
Resident Life, Advising and other staff members spent a few afternoons dropping in on freshman students to visit. Check on them about finals, registration and other related ideas.

The semi-annual Pancake Breakfast was last night and over 625 students attended.
Grade Substitution policy will be implemented for Fall 2011 at the latest. Dr. Haavisto will check with the Registrar on the possibility for implementation for Spring 2011.
December is the largest giving month for donations to the University. Advancement staff will be working during the holidays to accept gifts.
Michael Howland, a 1976 alum, has been named as the new Vice President for University Advancement. He will start February 1, 2011. He is currently serving on the Board of Trustees and will resign from that following commencement.
January 14-16 is set for a Baseball Reunion event in addition to the dedication of new baseball hitting facility.
February 3 is the annual free attendance basketball night sponsored by SeaBest Foods.

Track team throwing area is all graded and that project is progressing.
Dolphin Green: Lighting for the running path will is done. Benches and trashcans will be installed soon. A donor has agreed to fund the construction of the pavilion and the beach at Dolphin Green.
Construction new Student Solutions Center will be on the main level of the Davis Commons. An alum has volunteered to fund the construction and furnishing of the center.
Trustees Meeting Update: The board discussed the current state of the Bisk contract for online nursing. There was a good discussion concerning retention. The third-party auditors presented their annual results that featured a totally clean audit.
Athletics: Basketball tipoff lunch is today at noon at the arena. JU is hosting women’s soccer championship this weekend. Football is ranked 25th and continues to roll.
Education’s leadership programs are doing well. They are growing and growth is being discussed.
The search committees for the IA VP and DCOB Dean are being formed and the process will begin. Other recent announcements include Kim Hernandez going to Penn State and Dan Stephens will be leaving to be controller at the University of Idaho.
Arts and Sciences are moving ahead for developing the core general education needs of our online nursing students.
JUSA reported that the Navigator won 3rd place for University Tabloid newspapers at the national competition.

. Gover has been meeting with smaller groups of students and discussing retention related issues. They discussed why they selected JU, why they choose to stay at JU and recommendations for improvement.

s. Gover and Becker led a group of student life and academic folks on a visit to Florida Southern University. They have had recent success in improving retention. Students have really gravitated to the Solutions Center for assistance. In two years, retention has increased by 5%.

• The Academic Alert System and the Mid-term grade input has been heartily embraced. Faculty and coaches are responding well. Many faculty have voiced that they feel they are being heard.

• Sodexo is working on a new organizational structure to assist with Residence Halls issues. There are new assignments and hiring of staff that will focus efforts on servicing the needs of students. They have also started a new communications process for when requests are submitted.
• There is a tree removal and trimming project going on.
• The football and track project is complete
• Dolphin Green site work is moving forward. A contractor is donating a portion of the work for grading and design of the project. Lighting and emergency phones will be going in also.
• Campus will be piped for natural gas during the next few months saving the University money.
Student Transportation Survey
Our students say that there isn’t enough to do and they are trapped on campus. 170 students were surveyed about their desire for a weekend shuttle service to shopping and entertainment venues. Plans will be put together to help the students.
Campus Entrance Changes
Currently access to campus is open during the day and evening. Gates close around 10 and the only access is through the Merrill entrance. Starting tomorrow, gates will close at 6:30 p.m. All access will happen through the Merrill entrance.
Bisk Update
Negotiations are ongoing. We have agreed to bring up general education courses online for nursing students. JU will host and own the new courses. There are positive movements in additional areas of the contract negotiations.

rge Scaduto reported that the audit of last year’s books is nearly complete and things look well. He also reported what was being done to make the budget this year. Operating costs have increased and our retention did not hold as predicted.

The Board will meet Wednesday, October 27. Agenda items are needed ASAP.

Retention Discussion
President discussed his recent meetings with students and faculty. He handed out a summary of the discussion with student. Recurrent themes included finances, housekeeping, financial aid/scholarships, registrar, advising, academics, activities, transportation options, school spirit, and communication.
Often times, students discussed value. “For the amount of money we pay, we have expectation that issues will be addressed in a timely manner.” Oftentimes students feel like they aren’t being heard. They reminded the president that is the students who get connected early in their JU experience. Helping to establish connections with faculty, staff and each other are very importa

Verlander Appointed Interim Vice President of IA
As reported, Grady Jones is leaving JU and has accepted the position of Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement at Antioch University, effective October 1.
The president has appointed Alan Verlander as interim vice president for Institutional Advancement to serve until a permanent replacement is found for Jones.
During the next few months, Verlander will be serving as both Interim Vice President and Athletic Director. David Faraday, Assistant Athletic Director, has been asked to accept additional daily operational duties for athletics while Verlander serves this dual role. Verlander will be moving into this position immediately and will working cooperatively with Jones in the transition. Verlander will not be a candidate for the permanent position. The search for a new Vice President will begin immediately.

• Athletics is working on a large lacrosse event with national powerhouse teams, ESPN and Everbank Stadium.

Dr. Jerrold has resigned as Dean of the Orthodontics program. Dr. Becker will be name an interim dean while a search is conducted. President recognized Dr. Jerrold for his work building an excellent program that we can be proud of as an institution.

Tonight is the pancake breakfast.
Recruitment visits are up dramatically. JU hosted high school counselors on campus last Friday.
Founder’s Day was a success last Friday with numbers and media coverage.
The draft report on retention was discussed and will be presented to the Trustees.
An alum has donated a major stamp collection that the University can liquidate.
EAC held its largest open meeting last week with President Romesburg. There was an open discussion of all issues, including the budget. Everyone was reminded of the ending of the fiscal year.
Hall of Fame banquet is this Saturday.
We will be joining the MAAC for men’s Lacrosse. They are an eight-team conference with an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Facilities Update:
- The remainder of fence columns have been installed prior to the post-commencement construction of the new entrance.
- JEA is looking to move and update the main transformers.
- Investigating the options related to converting the boilers to natural gas. It will be a significant cost savings.

Plans are progressing for Spring Commencement on May 1. One change is that the Graduate Reception will be moved to the Alumni House. Stephen Lang and Frank Pace will present a workshop Friday night. The ceremonies are scheduled as usual.

- Alum David Walker will be on campus Monday, May 24 for a public speech.
- The Stephen Lang Film Festival will be April 15-19 featuring three films.

Campus Safety Walk Results: This is the 5th year of the Safety Walk.
Twenty-seven students and eight staff member canvassed campus. They have identified problem areas and made recommendations.
Physical Plant Update: Spring Spruce Up happened last Friday and several projects were completed. The contract for the new entrance has been awarded and work will begin after Commencement.
Founders Day Celebration: April 16 is the day to celebrate the University founding.
Commencement Speaker Announced: Stephen Lang, movie star and featured actor in Avatar, will be speaking and receiving an honorary degree. Mr. WW Gay will also be honored.

Physical Plant Update

Trustee Thursday

Strategic Plan
- The Board of Trustees approved a strategic plan. Details will be rolled out across campus and used in evaluative processes.
IRS 990 Changes
- The Federal Government has changed the reporting requirements. More information is being required on salaries.
Accounts Receivable
- Letters have been sent to students who owe money to the University for this semester. The controller’s office is conducting personal interviews to assist students. The Financial Aid office is involved with assisting the students.
Other
- Spring Spruce Up is scheduled for February 26.
- To avoid the editing problems that we experienced this year, the 2010 University Catalog is open for editing now with deadlines scheduled next summer.
- JU is investigating an on-campus Hertz Rental option for employees and students. It is a very innovative and technologically based.
- JU also has a new corporate rental agreement with Hertz. Info will be distributed across campus.
- EAC is doing a craft sale on November 19 in the lobby of Howard.
- Women’s Cross Country won the conference championship for the first time.
- If women’s volleyball wins out they will finish second in the conference.
- Women’s soccer will play Kennesaw for in the conference tournament semifinals.

The Dalton Agency is doing a commercial shoot on campus.
The Career Center is sponsoring College-to-Career workshops for students across campus.
H1N1 Update: Flu vaccinations are available sporadically and Baptist is unsure when they will be available. We do not know when it will be available and when the Health Department will release the H1N1. We have one student currently confirmed who went home to Chicago.
The current alert system has been tested numerous times. The response times were not what we expected since the software we are using is primarily a resident life service system. We have recently contracted with Black Board to utilize their system. We will have it installed within the next month.
JUSA president reported that all the vacant slots in JUSA were filled in the recent election. They have invited Sodexo food and physical plant, Campus Security and others. One big issue is the noon lunch hour and the major impact on the volume in the food venues. They plan to propose to the scheduling committee a change. Student shuttle service is being investigated by JUSA. An honor code is an initiative that they are reviewing and plan to propose changes to the faculty assembly.
The Annual Fund participation rate is nearing last year’s high-water mark.
Homecoming is 10 days away. RSVP numbers are up. The biggest event is the President’s Reception on Friday evening. The first four-year graduating class from 1959 will be honored.
EAC is having its Fall open meeting next Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Football won. Volleyball won 7 in a row. Men’s and women’s soccer are doing well. Track and cross-country are ranked.

David LePage was welcomed to his first President’s Council meeting representing Employee Advisory Committee.
Orientation: A report was given on the success of this year’s Orientation program.
The Freshman Leadership Retreat was a new program that invited students to apply for a 2-day retreat. Thirty-two students went on the retreat with student leaders and professional staff. Student Life is now looking to recruit them as future student leaders.
Opening dinner happened on the river with a very large tent. It worked well even with the crazy weather.
Matriculation had about 450 students and many faculty.
Families were very complimentary on the orientation program.
H1N1 Update: Health professionals have changed the vaccine schedule for H1N1. We currently have no students in quarantine. Residential Life staff are keeping a close eye on their students. Athletics is also watching the athletes closely.
Enrollment Report
- We are up 218 traditional undergrads for a total of 2,290.
- Total graduate students is 381
- Total headcount for students at JU is 3,554.
Other
- Athletics update: JU hosts UNF in volleyball on Wednesday night at 7. Women’s cross-country is ranked 11th in the south. Friday night is employee night at Women’s soccer. The first home football game is Saturday at 1 p.m. Hertz is coming on as a sponsor of athletics.
- SGA/JUSA presidents are having a reunion on Friday.
- Saturday is Family Day. There are 220 families coming.
- JUSA elections are next week. There are many students interested in becoming involved.

Facility Update
- Fence: The project is proceeding well now that permitting is complete. The whole fence should be done next week. The gates are being designed and will be installed. There have been a lot of positive comments on the look of the fence.
- The new locker rooms in the field house renovation are proceeding well.
- Three designated smoking areas have been installed.
- MSRI: Eight feet of soil was replaced and drilling of the pilings has started. New road plans are in and being reviewed.
- The roof on Swisher Science is being replaced.
- Terry Concert Hall had the paint and carpet redone.

- Campus Security showed their new uniforms to the council. Their name has changed and two Campus Security vehicles have been added.

Physical Plant Update
- The leaks in the Howard Building were discussed and solutions discussed.
- A large tree fell on Founders did some damage to the roof. Repairs should be completed soon.
- Hurricane season has started. Physical Plant is dealing with some dead trees.
- MSRI: The design documents are 75% and they are reviewing the aesthetics of the building. Foundation work should start within the next couple weeks. The building is on schedule for Fall 2010.

Homecoming
- The theme “Decades of Dolphins” has been selected by an alumni and student committee. This is the 50th reunion of the first four-year graduates. Homecoming is October 16-18.

- A proposal has come forward to name the roads on campus. Proposed names have been solicited and discussed.

President presented new aerial photos of the campus. He led a discussion on the future use of the golf course property. The students have a survey up right now to get ideas for what the students are interested in.
The University will be using the old president’s home for the next year or two through an agreement with Principal Financial Group. A discussion was held on what University functions would be possible for the home.

A committee has been formed to organize the celebration of the 75th anniversary.

JUSA reported on the open forum with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. They outlined their plans for helping us with our campus safety. The sheriff called the president to let him know of their increased patrol plans. Once our fence is up, they may be able to assist with some cameras to monitor the perimeter.
Next Wednesday is the Senior BBQ that is replacing the Senior Boat Cruise this year.
EAC reported on the recent open meeting. Many topics were discussed including the University’s hiring policies and that these President’s council reports were a bit thin. (I try to pay attention, but sometimes……..)
Rotary Club will host a JU/Artis golf tournament that will be held at Jacksonville Country Club and will be held on May 11.
IT upgraded the campus bandwidth and all is working well.

Physical Plant Update

- The EPA audit second phase is now upon JU. We must create an Environmental Management System that reviews and manages impact.

- Thanks for all the help on Spring Spruce Up. Lots of planting across campus was accomplished. One thousand plants were planted.

Heartwalk
- The American Heart Association will hold a walk on Sept. 25. JU will organize a team and participate.
Next month is Women’s history month. The lunch is March 24. A student, an employee and an external person will be honored.
Other
- Relay for life will be featured at next Monday’s basketball game. The relay will be held April 3 & 4. There are 18 teams signed up so far.
- Spring Spruce Up on February 27 along with Nellie’s birthday.
- Groundbreaking for the MSRI will be at 10 a.m. on the 27th
- Campus Safety Walk on Feb. 26th
- Women’s basketball plays Thursday and Saturday and Men’s on Saturday and Monday. These will be the last home games.
- March 26 is Science Math and Engineering Day on campus. JU will host over 400 high school students at this event.
- A university in Mexico is looking for a U.S. university partner to provide short-term English courses, faculty exchanges, student exchanges, and other partnerships.

Physical Plant Update
- Softball field had a washout with the heavy rain. There will be more work done to shore the area up.
- The MSRI core samples are fine. The building was bumped to the east a bit.
- There will be a good deal of landscaping as part of Spring Spruce Up.
QEP
- The QEP selection committee made a presentation on the selection of a Quality Enhancement Plan. Focus groups are happening now and are part of larger process.
- The QEP will be linked with the strategic priorities. The council brainstormed some of the ideas related to sustainability, diversity and globalization.
Student Radio & Howard Building
- Live feed of student radio to the Howard Lobby. Calming "indie rock" music and controllable by admissions was approved.
Boy's Home
- There are possibilities of dealing with the Boy's Home. An equestrian program for our students. The opportunity for students to board horses there. And possible other long-term relationship.
Campus Sustainability Policy
- The policy was reviewed by the council and discussed.
Textbooks on Reserve
- There have been discussions about how to get copies of textbooks in the library. There are issues and roadblocks that will be worked on.
Sodexo Foundation
- They are collecting money for hunger related organizations. This is a national program where they raise millions of dollars nationally. All of the money raised goes to the hunger programs.
Student Meal Plan Survey
- The students are seeking ways to adjust the meal plans and its flexibility. Any changes will be worked through with Financial Affairs and the contract. JU has a high usage rate (89%) for the meal usage.

Physical Plant Update
- Intramural softball field upgrade is underway. The athletic offices are at the drywall stage with a completion date of early March. Parking for visitors will be reviewed.
Enrollment Report
- We are currently up 44 undergraduate students and down 5 EMBA students.
- Freshman applications are doing well. The admitted students for Fall 2009 are being worked hard.
Trustee Strategic Planning
- The trustees committee for Strategic Planning has asked President to provide information. The list was discussed. The information is needed by next week.
Marching Band
- A student sent an email to the president suggesting a marching band. The topic will be reviewed with Admissions and fine arts.
Scholarship Football
- A review of the possibility of scholarship football will occur. All costs associated with the program will be reviewed.

- There was a leak/flood in DCOB yesterday. Repairs will be made immediately.
- New student orientation is today (138 new students).
