Jacksonville, Fla.—Dr. Donald H. Horner Jr., education commissioner for the city of Jacksonville, will discuss a paper he co-wrote titled “Lifelong Learning: City of Jacksonville as a Business Case Study," with David Hunt, public information officer, at the 23rd International Conference on College Teaching & Learning from 8 to 8:30 a.m. April 12 at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra, Fla.

 

Horner also serves as a moderator at the conference from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 12 for a panel addressing: “Lifelong Learning: The Big Picture.” Panelists include the Honorable Betty Burney, chairwoman, Duval County School Board; Dr. Steven W. Wallace, president, Florida State College at Jacksonville; and Ms. Connie Hodges, president, United Way of North East Florida.

 

"When a city has a robust predilection for and commitment to education, it has a stronger foundation for economic success,” said Horner. “Enhancing and emphasizing the city’s education system helps attract quality employers while building a more dynamic crop of entrepreneurs and thinkers, which in turn helps the city better compete in an increasingly global economy."

 

Horner became the City of Jacksonville’s first education commissioner on July 8, 2011. He is on a two-year sabbatical as the director of the Davis Leadership Center, and professor of management, at the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University. A native of Bressler, Pa., he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in general engineering. He also received an MS in transportation systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford University. Horner has written and consulted extensively in the areas of organizational culture, leadership and high performing teams, and regularly appears as a media analyst.
