My name is Darrell Smith, and I am a senior at Jacksonville University. I am a computer science major and completing a minor in business management. I was in the United States Navy for about 7 and half years, I completed two tours to Iraq, and completed a number of tours all over the world. After serving time in active duty, I decided to change career paths and start my new path at Jacksonville University. Currently right now I am a member of the SVA (Students Veterans of America), a member of JU Student SSS, a member of the JU Computer Science Club, serving in the United States Reserve, and also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity inc. I was born and raised in the great state of Arkansas, but I have been living here for the last eleven years. After graduating, I am going to go for my master’s in database administration, and work for Microsoft, or Google building databases.
I am a 26 year retired Navy veteran. During my naval career I gained a variety of professional experience, I was an instructor in a traditional school house setting as well as in the practical application laboratory environment. I served as the senior advisor and assistant director of training. When I retired I knew I needed to have a college education to have the same level of success I had in the Navy. I chose JU because of its reputation, its student friendly environment, the education programs available which fit my needs, and the veteran friendly environment I experienced during my College selection process. I started here at JU in June 2011 and wanted to become involved in the transition experience for veterans with the same education goals as myself and was offered a Veterans Affairs work study position in the registrar’s office giving me the opportunity to apply my knowledge of veterans education programs to help fellow veterans in their pursuit of continuing education. This position led to an opportunity to become a permanent member of the registrar’s team. I am a Senior graduating in December 2013, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science and a Minor in Management.

I was born and raised in Woodstock NY; I joined the NAVY in 2001 as a culinary specialist right out of high school at 17. I served five years at Tinker AFB and another three in NAS Key West. I came to Jacksonville when the NAVY stationed my husband here in 2009. I went to school at FSCJ for two years received my AA and transferred to Jacksonville University. I am currently a senior set to graduate with my bachelors in Biology Fall 2013. Since starting at Jacksonville University I started the Student Veterans of America Jacksonville University chapter, and am the current President of this chapter. I have presented three times at the JU symposium, I have completed two independent studies with publications in scientific journals pending, and most recently presented a poster at the Association of Southeastern Biologists. I am also an active member of the community volunteering at the Jacksonville humane society and the Jacksonville Zoo, and the Vice President of my homeowners association. I would like to continue my education and go to graduate school and maybe one day my Ph.D.
